Nepal Santosh Neupane, Editor/Publisher of "Narayani Express National Daily" published from Hetauda was threatened by Maoist on 22 April at Mahari Bazaar, Hetauda. Neupane was threatened for publishing various news related to the Maoists.
The news that the daily published are, about the conflict between Maoists and locals on 16 April at Bashmadi of Makawanpur and about the clash between timber contractor and Young Communist League (YCL) on collecting money from local bazaar on 18 April. The newspaper on 20 April had also disseminated the news about robbing and attacking the house of three people that were imprisoned by Maoists.
They were released on 19 April form Southern Regional Jail of Maoists located at Hatiya village of Makawanpur . After the publication of these news, the Maoists interrupted the vehicular activity at Manahari Bazaar, Makwanpur, demanding that editor Neupane should come to the bazaar and ask for forgiveness.
The issue was solved after an all party meeting. An unidentified person who called himself to be a Maoist on 22 April threatened Neupane through telephone to take his life and to set the publication house on fire. Neupane also informed that he has been receiving threats in the past whenever he disseminated news against the Maoists.
Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) has condemned the incident and has expressed its serious concern over the continous threats against journalists for writing news.
FNJ also called the Maoists to be committed towards freedom of press and expression. It has also urged the government to ensure safety and security of the journalists and to take immediate action against the guilty.
